“A History of China in Silk: The Chris Hall Collection” showcases over 100 masterworks of textiles, highlighting China’s silk heritage and cross-cultural influences, exploring the enduring beauty, legacy and evolution of silk in China — from ancient times to the 20 th century, spanning 2,000 years.
Through stunning examples of dyeing, weaving, and design, the exhibition reveals how silk reflects centuries of social, cultural, and technological change. Visitors will also explore the global influence of Chinese textiles through stories of trade and fashion exchange.
Highlights include Ming and Qing dynasty rank badges, and rare religious fabrics, celebrated for their craftsmanship and symbolic richness. Complemented by research materials such as textile sample books, the collection offers deep insights into traditional techniques and meanings.
Curated from the lifetime work of Chris Hall, a renowned Hong Kong-based textile expert, this exhibition celebrates his dedication to preserving Chinese textile heritage. In 2034, the full collection will be donated to the Museum, establishing it as one of the world’s most comprehensive centres for historical Chinese textiles.
