A warehouse tour of Teresa Coleman’s private collection of imperial court costumes
Teresa Coleman’s extensive collection showcases the rich heritage of Chinese silk, with textiles celebrated for both their beauty and historical significance. Silk played a vital role in shaping China’s trade, culture, and global influence, making these garments more than decorative—they are narrative threads of Chinese history.
During the warehouse tour, Teresa will present highlights from the costume collection, including formal court robes worn by emperors and princes, as well as informal attire for women and children. Several uncut robes reveal the extraordinary craftsmanship behind these garments.
Visitors who wish to explore further are welcome to visit her gallery in Central, where additional accessories, paintings, and prints are on display.
Since ancient times, the color, design, and symbolism of Chinese court dress have been strictly governed. As early as 2000 BC, the Ministry of Sericulture set design standards based on rank. These became highly codified during the Qing dynasty, when dragon-adorned silk robes were worn on ceremonial occasions.
