Nestled on the hillside of Happy Valley since 1845, the Hong Kong Cemetery—formerly known as the Colonial Cemetery or Happy Valley Cemetery—holds nearly two centuries of layered history. Opposite the racecourse, this garden-like site offers a rare glimpse into the city’s colonial past and multicultural heritage.
Among its graves are government officials, soldiers, missionaries, merchants and seafarers, alongside Commonwealth war memorials from both World Wars. The cemetery sites beside Jewish, Hindu, Parsee, Catholic, and Muslim burial grounds, reflecting Hong Kong’s diverse history.
This 3.5 km walk (250 m elevation) is not a hike, but we recommend comfortable clothing. Don’t miss this chance to explore one of the city’s most overlooked heritage landmarks.
