This exhibition presents over 150 masterpieces from the renowned Huaihaitang Collection, nearly half of which have been generously donated to the CUHK Art Museum for research and teaching. The 18th century marked the golden age of Chinese court art, spanning from the late Kangxi to the early Jiaqing reigns. During this period, porcelain, jade, bronzes, lacquerware, textiles, scholars’ objects, books, rubbings, calligraphy, and painting flourished—each crafted with refined materials, opulent style, and meticulous skill to meet “imperial standards” (內廷恭造).
In 2005, the CUHK Art Museum collaborated with the First Historical Archives of China to publish the Archives of the Imperial Workshops (《 (造辦處各作成做活計清檔》), a landmark reference documenting the design, revision, production and distribution of objects under the Imperial Household Department. Drawing on these archives, the exhibition reconstructs the making of Qing court art and highlights its exceptional historical and cultural value.
