The Kowloon Walled City, and now Kowloon City, have been focal points of Hong Kong’s history, changing continuously in reflection of the times. This little enclave is a good place to take a sample of Hong Kong’s diverse story through its myriad Ghost Signs - remnants of defunct signage left behind when businesses close or move on.
Guided by Billy Potts, this walking tour will start at the famed South Gate of the Kowloon Walled City and, from there, we'll wend through the streets of Kowloon City to learn about the place with a narrative anchored in the Ghost Signs that we encounter. Along the way we may even spot some new examples of these curious urban artefacts.
Walking tour highlights include:
- An overview about what makes a Ghost Sign, using real-world examples that demonstrate Hong Kong's unique varieties
- Tips on finding and documenting Ghost Signs
- A discussion about capturing and celebrating Hong Kong history in the face of ongoing (re)development

The Speaker
Billy Potts is a writer and designer born and raised in Hong Kong. He trained as a lawyer and then started a design consultancy with a special emphasis on local heritage. Hong Kong has always captured his imagination. As a writer, Billy is interested in the city's esoteric folk traditions, design, culture, art and environment. He is key contributor at Zolima CityMag and co-author of Zolima Culture Guide Vol 1: Henry Steiner's Hong Kong.
Hong Kong Ghost Signs is a Design Trust grant project, whereas Billy collaborates with photographer, Ben Marans.
