Talk and Screening - City of Shells - Ms. Marine Thomas and Prof Hayden Russell

THIS EVENT IS ORGANISED BY THE HONG KONG NATURAL HISTORY SOCIETY (HKNHS)

Produced and directed by Mike Sakas, this one-hour documentary, filmed over three years, chronicles over seven years of ongoing research and conservation work across Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta carried out by The Nature Conservancy. The film highlights the importance of oyster reefs and the fascinating history of oysters in Hong Kong going back hundreds of years.

We are delighted that Marine Thomas, Associate Director of The Nature Conservancy, and a prominent advocate for restoring Hong Kong’s oyster reefs as seen in the film, will be joining us at the screening. She will be joined by Professor Bayden Russell from the University of Hong Kong, who specialises in ecology and biodiversity and whose research also focuses on oyster reef restoration.

The Speakers

Marine Thomas is the Associate Director of Conservation for The Nature Conservancy (TNC) Hong Kong. She is responsible for overseeing TNC’s marine conservation projects on the ground, with a current focus on restoring natural habitats and developing sustainable oyster aquaculture.

Marine joined TNC in 2014 as a volunteer, bringing seven years of project management experience from various industries in the corporate world. She graduated with a Master’s degree in Environmental Management from The University of Hong Kong. Marine also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Chinese language and civilization from the National Institute of Oriental Language and Civilization in Paris and a Master’s of Science in International Management for China from the School of Oriental and African Studies in London.

Dr Bayden Russell is the Associate Director, Area of Ecology & Biodiversity, The University of Hong Kong and the Associate Director of the Swire Institute of Marine Science and Associate Professor in the School of Biological Sciences.

Bayden is an ecophysiologist whose research focuses on the impact of climate change and eutrophication on ecosystem function, the biology of key species, and how best to manage and conserve ecosystems in this context.

He also investigates the human relationship with, and dependence on, marine ecosystems and how these can be made sustainable through habitat restoration (especially oyster reefs) and the development of regenerative aquaculture to improve ecosystem functions and services.
