Mr. Michael Broom

September 18, 2020 by diorama

1951 - 2020

RASHK President 2012 - 2018

RASHK Council Member 2009 - 2020

RASHK Activities Committee Chair 2009 - 2016

RASHK Activities Committee Member 2008 - 2016

Supporter of FRASHK 2016 - 2020

It is with great sadness within our Society that we learnt of the passing of Michael Broom, our Immediate Past President. Mike was a very active member of longstanding within RASHK and contributed to the wellbeing and development of the Society in so many ways. Mike understood how important regular and well organized activities were for our highly informed membership, taking up the role of Activities Committee Member in 2008 and then Activities Committee Chair from 2009- 2016. He was RASHK Council Member from 2009 until his recent passing.

He took on the role of RASHK President in 2011 at a time when the Council very much welcomed his calm and hardworking leadership. He held that post until 2018. During that period he was active in encouraging a new generation of Council and Activities Committee members to contribute their knowledge and expertise to the RASHK community.

Mike actively participated in many of the RASHK overseas and PRC organized trips and those who were fortunate to attend these, spoke of him as a great travel companion  He worked hard to build up external relationships beneficial to the Society. Guest speakers were always warmly welcomed, elegantly introduced, thanked and rewarded with a good dinner in the convivial company of a few RASHK members afterwards.

He actively supported the RASHK-linked Ride Fund in its quest to promote publication of works on Hong Kong history, society and culture, as well as the activities of the energetic informal ‘Friends of RASHK’ group based in UK.

We will very much miss Mike’s extensive community knowledge, organisational memory  and wise counsel in future- may he rest in peace.

This page has been created to provide a link for our members and friends to share their memories and express their condolences. You may write in condolences or words of appreciation in the submission box below. If you would like to write down a memory or words of appreciation, share pictures/video clips of Mike’s life, please contact our Administrator for assistance at membership@royalasiaticsociety.com.hk. These memories will be combined and shared with our membership, his family, as well as a future event to be organised in celebration of Mike’s life- at a time when existing social constraints imposed by Covid-19 risk are eased.

Details remain to be cleared and will be circulated later, but there is also agreement in principle within our Council that donations in Mike’s memory can be made to the Ride Fund, as lasting recognition of his contribution to our Society.
